Implementation of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Reforms
A collection of DfE guidance and information on the EYFS reforms.
On 1 September, the new Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework became statutory for all early years providers in England. To aid implementation of the reforms, the Department for Education (DfE) have delivered various resources and supporting materials, including:
- Development Matters: The non-statutory curriculum guidance that offers a top-level view of how children develop and learn for all early years practitioners.
- Help for Early Years Providers: A new online service which features resources to support childminders and staff in PVI settings to understand and implement the reforms.
- EYFS profile handbook: Guidance for LAs and early years providers on completing EYFS profile assessments at the end of reception year to support practitioners to make accurate judgements about children’s attainment.
- What to expect in the Early Years Foundation Stage: Guidance for parents on what to expect in their child’s development to help practitioners engage with parents about their child’s development.
- A Celebratory Approach to Working with Children with SEND guidance - Giving additional support in the Early Years: Guidance to help practitioners who may be supporting children who require additional help or children with SEND.
- EYFS reforms implementation videos: A small suite of videos with direct messages from DfE, Ofsted and early adopter schools talking about their experiences in delivering the reforms and how they have changed their approach to the EYFS and assessment.
The DfE are producing materials to explain the new EYFS profile. These will intentionally take a different format and approach to the existing ones to reflect the changes to assessment under the revised EYFS framework. The DfE will provide a collection of video case studies to demonstrate teachers and leaders having professional discussions about individual children’s holistic development in order to make EYFS profile judgements.
