Course Description

Behaviour and self-regulation in the early years is a course designed for all early years practitioners working with children from birth to five years. The course aims to support practitioners to learn ways to manage inappropriate behaviour and conflict in early years and understand how to prevent meltdowns and misunderstandings.
The course is split over two easy to digest modules.
How will this course help?
Module one
This module will cover:
- Introduction: Handling inappropriate behaviours and conflicts;
- Clarity of expectations, explaining, modelling and reinforcing 'golden rules';
- The 'reliable adult', consistency, co-regulation and self-regulation;
- Routines and self-regulation, choice, agency and responsibility; and
- What to do when inappropriate behaviour happens? Define, Defer, Distract, Defuse and Deal.
Module two
This module will cover:
- Introduction: Handling meltdowns and misunderstandings;
- How to help children understand their emotions;
- Making mistakes, the role of challenge and supporting children to 'fail';
- Clarity of explanations, how to frame what you say so that children understand it; and
- Self-regulation and language development, framing behaviour to support metacognition (thinking about thinking).
Both modules consists of a short introduction video followed by four videos, between 5 and 10 minutes long. Each video covers one aspect of the overall topic, and ends with a set of reflection points for you to discuss with your staff team. During reflection points you are encourage to pause the video to reflect and make notes.

Who is this course for?
This e-learning course is aimed at all practitioners working with children from birth to 5 years and their families.
Price
This course is fully funded (free) for the Bolton early years provider only. Inactive accounts will be deactivated after a period of 12 months. We advise you download and keep a copy of your course completion certificates in your personal files.
Practitioners from other authorities can access this e-learning session for a limited period of 12 months at a cost of £36.00 per person.
Charges will become effective on the date when we issue the booking confirmation and welcome email. All requests to withdraw must be received in writing to StartWellBookings@bolton.gov.uk with the date accepted as the date of the email.

If you are booking on behalf of other members of staff, you must provide individual names and email addresses for each person in the 'Additional Information' section of the booking form to complete registration. Generic email addresses such as manager@, office@ or email addresses in the name of the nursery not the individual will not be accepted.
When registration is complete, a welcome email will be issued and you can then access the E-learning platform here.

Course Delivery
Once enrolled, you can complete this E-learning course anytime, at your own pace.
Please note: to get the most out of this training, delegates will need to allocate at least 2 hours to complete the course. You will be able to stop, start, and revisit the modules as and when needed.
On completion of this course, a certificate will be issued automatically.
